Rick & Steve the Happiest Gay Couple in All the World
My stop motion animated show Rick & Steve the Happiest Gay Couple in All the World began as a short film completely animated with LEGO bricks that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
MTV optioned the short and I developed it into a series for LogoTV, where it ran for two seasons.
It was the first prime time show with a Filipino lead character and with a queer family at the center.
I was lucky enough to land my dream cast including Wilson Cruz, Peter Paige, Alan Cumming, Margaret Cho, Lori Alan, and Billy West with incedible guest stars like Mark Hamill, George Takei, Jennifer Coolidge, Laraine Newman, RuPaul, and Lance Bass.
Eating Out: The 5 Movie Franchise
I never dreamed Eating Out would grow into a cinematic universe spanning 5 feature films! It began as a joke in my screenwriting class...
I was a big fan of college sex comedies like Revenge of the Nerds, Porky's, and American Pie. But there was so little represenation of us in them, and when there were queer characters, we tended to be the butt of the joke or the worst thing that could happen to the straight lead characters.
What would a college sex comedy centering queer people look like? That's where Eating Out came from.
We made the first film in 2003 in 10 days for $43K and it blew up. It played over 100 film festivals, got a theatrical release and became the best selling LGBTQ title on DVD for two years
We made a second film Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds in 2006, followed by Eating Out: All You Can Eat (2009), Eating Out: Drama Camp (2011), Eating Out: The Open Weekend (2012).
I'd still love to do a 6th and final film but it's so tough to make money on small budget niche films these days, so investors are hard to find. If you are one, message me'
Boy Culture & Boy Culture: Generation X
Boy Culture was my second feature film, adapted from the incredible novel of the same name by Matthew Rettenmund.
I was so drawn to this story of an emotionally detached, cynical sex worker who finds love and creates his own kind of family
It premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2006 and won a number of awards before its theatrical release.
In 2021 Matthew and I wrote a follow-up series together called Boy Culture: Generation X exploring how the world of sex work evolved over the 15 years in between.
EKG
EKG is a fim (turned pilot) about young Asian doctor learning to balance his conservative home life, intense work life, and the freedom he discovers in the Asian LGBTQ+ community.
The film takes a realistic look at sex and recreational drug use in the community, and it's controversial because we don't condemn it.
Written, produced by, and starring the incredible Todd Lien, I jumped at the chance to direct this!
Before I Got Famous
Before I Got Famous is a comedy series I wrote that is streaming on Peacock and Revry. It follows a young, gay, Chinese immigrant trying to break into the homophobic and racist Hollywood system and hoping to find love along the way.
Still Waiting in the Wings
This musical comedy was such a joy to direct! Still Waiting in the Wings had an increidble once-in-a-lifetime cast inclduing Ed Asner, Chita Rivera, Cindy Williams, Sally Struthers, Lee Meriwether, and Carole Cooke.
Camp Michael Jackson
My first paid directing jobs were with the incredible documentary production company, World of Wonder.
During Michael Jackson's trial, we learned that many fans had quit their jobs and moved to Santa Maria to offer their support to him.
WOW sent me to document and get to know these people and tell their stories and Camp Michael Jackson was born.
It was a challenge because many believed the whole trial was kickstarted by a documentary maker, so many were suspicious of me. But I sought to get to know the humans behind the signs and eventually they opened up and gave us access to some of their most emotional and inspiring moments.
Coming Soon: Love & Lockdown
Currently in post production, my latest feature film Love & Lockdown tells the story of a transgender Filipino man who travels back to the small village where he was born and gets stuck during the COVID lockdown.
Filmed entirely on location in the Philippines, it's the first romantic comedy with a Filipino transmasculine lead!
Q. Allan Brocka, Filmmaker
Director and Writer Q. Allan Brocka was born in Guam and raised all over the world. He went to 18 different schools before graduating. A perpetual outsider, his work often centers the stories of LGBTQ+ characters and people of color and explores themes of “fitting in” and intersectional identities.
Allan has been honored with more than 70 awards for his work. He created the prime time stop-motion animated series Rick & Steve the Happiest Gay Couple in All the World, which aired for two seasons on MTV’s Logo network and in more than 20 countries. He also created the wildly successful Eating Out film franchise, the critically acclaimed feature film and subsequent series Boy Culture, as well as Revry’s streaming series Before I Got Famous.
His upcoming film is the transmasculine-led Love & Lockdown, shot entirely on location in the Philippines.
Allan earned an MFA in film at California Institute of the Arts. When he’s not on set, he teaches film directing in the graduate program at Chapman University, mentors up and coming LGBTQ filmmakers through his volunteer work and bakes and consumes entire batches of pastries with the full intention of “hiking it off.”
